Pasir Panyandaan Pre-Islamic Grave Sites

One of the most interesting trips into the eastern Bandung hills takes you to Pasir Panyandaan. Travel back in time a couple of centuries and see pre-Islamic grave sites in quiet rural setting just 4 km from one of Bandung’s busiest streets.
Pre-Islamic graves are situated on a hillock called Pasir Panyandaan, which commands a splendid view over Bandung Basin with the distant mountains to the south. Apparently, in pre-historic times the hilltop was leveled and its sides cut to form a fairly flat square. In the middle of it, under the two tallest trees, is a grave. Southeast of it and a little bit lower is another grave. Yet another one is directly south of the first grave and overgrown with bamboo.
These graves are basically semi-circles of stones open to the south. A large flat stone is in the middle of each one, and on top of it is a big round stone about 30 cm in diameter. On the southeastern grave is something like a stele, a large flat stone standing upright, albeit without an inscription. The whole thing is a bit eerie. These graves may originate from the Hindu era, or at least they look that way. Who knows?
